“TESS OF THE D’URBERVILLES”
   I.      THEME ANALYSIS
1.   Faithfulness      
a.     Definition         : The faithfulness is the action or activity which always standing beside/ belief/ support/ keeping heart to the people who loved to.
b.     Quotation         :
-          Chapter 29, page 88
“She loved him so passionately, and he was so godlike in her eyes; and being, though untrained instinctively refined, her nature cried for his tutelary guidance.”
c.     Explanation      :
It gave evidence that in the story, there was the scene where Tess kept her feeling for Angel, the one and only she loved.

2.   Honesty
a.     Definition         : Honesty is the quality of being honest
b.     Quotation         :
-          Chapter 30 page 91
“But my history. I want you to know it – you must let me tell you – you will not like me so well!”
“ .. there was a trouble in my family; father was not very industrious, and he drank a little.”
“I-I-am nor a Durbeyfield, but a d’Urbervilles – a descendant of the same family as those that owned the old house we passes. And – we are all gone to nothing!” said Tess to Angel.
c.     Explanation      :
It is clear there were some honesty sentences showed by the character (Tess) who tells the true story in her unlucky life to someone she believe (Angel).

3.     Love
a.     Definition         : Love is a very strong feeling of affection towards someone who you are romantically attracted to.
b.     Quotation         :
-          Chapter 30 page 92
“Now then, Mistress Teresa d’Urbervilles, I have you. Take my name, and so you will escape yours! This secret is out, so why should you any longer refuse me?” said Angel
“If it SURE to make you happy to have me as your wife, and you feel that you do wish to marry me VERY, VERY much –“
“I do, dearest, of course!”
c.     Explanation      :
It’s so cool the analyst takes this conversation among Tess and Angel when they were falling in love and accept the weakness each other, no matter what has happened or what will happen.

4.     Sacrifice
a.     Definition         : Sacrifice means something that is valuable or important; you give it up, usually to obtain something else for yourself or for other people.
b.     Quotation         :
-          Chapter 31 page 97
“Tess –going to MARRY him –a gentleman!”repeated Izz Huett
...
“He ought to marry one of you,” murmured Tess. She cried,”... You would be better for him then – I don’t know what I’m saying! O! O!
-          Chapter 32
“Don’t let them tease you about the boons”
c.     Explanation      :
In chapter 31 page 97, there was feeling of giving up in one moment for the people (her friends who love Angel) she loved too with do nothing for someone (Angel) she loved
In chapter 32
Angel tried to protect someone he loved and didn’t care what people judge.

5.     Regret
a.     Definition         : Regret is the situation that you have done, but you wish that you had not done it.
b.     Quotation         :
“Why didn’t you stay and love me when I – was sixteen; living with my little sisters and brothers, and you dances on the green? O, Why didn’t you, why didn’t you!” she said, impetuously clasping her hands.
Angel began to comfort and reassure her, thinking himself...
“Ah! Why didn’t I stay!” he said, “That just what I feel. If I had only known! But you must not be so bitter in your regret...”
c.     Explanation      :
At these quotations, it can be identified that Tess regretted the past time when both had a chance to be together then why Angel didn’t come to her life from the time being. It’s not what she wanted, the bad fate which made her met to Alec was the worst moment she had.

   II.        CHARACTER ANALYSIS
1.     Angel Clare
a.     Optimist
-          Chapter      : 27 (page 82)
O, Mr. Clare -- I cannot be your wife – I cannot be!”
“But Tess...” ... and holding her still more greedily close. “Do you say no? Surely you love me?”
“O yes! And I would rather be you’re that anybody’s in the world”...”but I CANNOT marry you...
“Then why you refuse me?”...  “It is too sudden to be asked thus, my pretty?”...”if you will let it pass, please, Tessy, I will give you time...”
ð  Tess refused Angel to marry him, but here, Angel never gave up making Tess believe with him as a proven that he really loved her. At this moment, when Angel was falling in love to Tess, he really wanted to marry her even Tess always refused him with her reason.

b.     Conscientious
-          Chapter      : 25 (page 75 pr.3)
“Despite his heterodoxy, faults, and weaknesses, Clare was a man with a conscience”.”....possessed as great a dimension as the life of the mightiest to himself.”
ð  Angel is figured as a conscience man who always follow his voice of heart before do something

c.     Ambitious
-          Chapter 26 page  79
“What kind of wife do you think would be best for me as a thrifty hard-working farmer?”
ð  It was for his father, the first question as a beginning for main aim. Then his father answer that question with the final choices is
“Mercy Chant is of a very good family” said his father
ð  After has debated to her father, he asked to her mother
“Mother, I beg your pardon, but.... I may worse than choose her.”
“It was for herself that he loved Tess, her soul, her heart, her substance....”
ð  Angel debated with his parents to convey them that he was falling in love not for Mercy but for Tess

2.     Mr. Clare
a.     Religious
Chapter 26 page 78
When Angel asked what kind of wife his father think it would be best for him, then there’s an answer from Mr. Clare
A truly Christian woman...”
ð     From this statement, it’s able to take conclusion that Angel’s father chooses a factor of religiousness.
“Mr. Clare was a clergyman within the last 20 years...”
“His father ‘s hill – surrounded little town, the Tudor Church...” (Page 76)
ð     Here is enough proven that Mr. Clare was a parson who has to be a holy person of his religion

b.     Wise
Chapter 26 page 78
“This considerateness on old Mr. Clare’s part led Angel onward...”
“... who will be a help and a comfort to you...”
ð  His policies with several reason is considered to make his son gets better

c.     Critical
Chapter 26 page 80
“O no. The original d’Urbervilles decayed and disappears sixty or eighty years ago....”
“Yes, certainly. It would be desirable.”
ð  Mr. Clare gave the statement reasonably to his son Angel. He also asked the question in detail from what Angel said critically.
3.     Reverend Felix
a.     Charming
“And therefore, we must make the best of it” (chapter 25)
= he has a spirit to motivate Angel
b.     Careless
“Felix, though an offshoot.... was less self-sacrificing and disinterested.” (Chapter 25 page 77)
= he didn’t pay much attention
c.     Unkind
“He was less ready than his father to pardon it as a slight to his own teaching.” (Chapter 25 page 77)
= he is a type of person who hard to forgive something.
